Hospital Associated Infection (HAI)
Hospital Associated Infection (HAI)
NMHA is a member of a multi-disciplinary Healthcare Associated Infections Advisory Committee (HAI-AC), under the direction of the New Mexico Department of Health. The HAI-AC recently guided a pilot of HAI surveillance in six hospitals. The hospitals collected information on two important HAI indicators from July 1, 2008 to May 31, 2009:
- central-line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI)
- influenza vaccination rates of health care workers
The hospitals reported CLABSI events through the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), a CDC web-based data collection and analysis tool. Hospital-level and state-level rates of HAIs can be compared to national rates using NHSN.
The six participating hospitals:
- Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center
- Heart Hospital of New Mexico
- Memorial Medical Center
- Presbyterian Hospital
- San Juan Regional Medical Center
- University of New Mexico Hospital
As of 2009, the HAI-AC has expanded from the pilot phase to statewide tracking of HAIs; those who join the initiative will receive ongoing technical assistance through monthly teleconferences and access to staff dedicated to HAI surveillance. Recent legislation (Senate Bill 408) addresses public reporting by hospitals starting July 2011. By joining now, facilities can learn how to use NHSN and become better prepared for public reporting while being responsive to community requests for quality transparency.
